Obama describes Pennsylvania voters as being 'bitter' and angry over their economic plight: Mr. Obama outlined challenges facing his presidential candidacy in the upcoming primaries of Pennsylvania and Indiana, particularly winning over white working-class voters who have fallen through the cracks of the last two presidential administrations.

“So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,” Mr. Obama said."

He is then criticized for being "elitist" and "condescending" and 'looking down on the voters' by partisans from the Clinton and McCain campaigns:

...Mrs. Clinton issued several statements criticizing Mr. Obama, including ones that contained criticism from Republicans. Soon, the McCain campaign also weighed in with criticism of Mr. Obama’s remarks from the California fundraiser.

“It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking,” said Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser to Mr. McCain. “It is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans.”

The response:

Even CNN's not buying it:

So, McCain, the son and grandson of two Admirals, and Hillary Clinton, the wife of a former president who made 109 million dollars in income over the last six years (and good for them) are calling Barrack Obama, whose father was an Ethiopian goat herder, who was raised by a single mother who was on food stamps, an 'elitist'???

Makes me wonder how rich the irony vein is going to get in this election year.

Hillary knows that her only chance (indeed, the only reason she's still in the race) is to wait around hoping that Obama will make some colossal campaign-ending mistake. So she's going to take every little thing she can, even the most minor little gaffe, and try to blow it out of proportion.

And her margin in the vote lead slowly shrinks (http://www.reachm.com/amstreet/archives/2008/04/11/two-fresh-polls-show-obama-closing-in-on-clinton-in-pennsylvania/) as the days go by...

I read somewhere that some Clinton campaign workers are *furious* that the Pastor Wright issue didn't seem to inflict any serious long-term damage on Obama.

Too bad.
