Eleven Saints
Jul. 4th, 2009 02:18 pmJason Webley's Elevanniversary Show at Town Hall last night was a blast. Like Amanda Palmer, he's a very generous performer. It's hard to decide who's getting more from the show, the audience or the performer, but he was obviously having a wonderful time and was thrilled to be sharing it with all of us and all his friends on stage. This was actually the first time I've managed to see Jason live, though I've been hearing about him for years.
A friend of mine played some Webley during a photo shoot probably about seven or eight years ago and I made the same observation that tends to come up-- "Sounds like Tom Waits". And he does have that barking, growling vocal delivery that is reminiscent of Tom; not a beautiful voice, but one with tons of character to carry it through. But otherwise, he's nobody's imitator and there's nobody else like him either.
As posted earlier, I had bought two extra tickets because (a) they were remarkably inexpensive for a show of this quality, and (b) I figured it would be fun to drag some company along. I waited a bit too long to bring it up though, and didn't ultimately find anyone to come along before the show, so I went and figured I would see what happened. I really wasn't looking to 'scalp' them, just hoping I would find someone who really wanted to go and couldn't lay hands on a ticket.
As it turned out, after encountering several other friends, I bumped into my friend and favorite masseuse,
c_bee in line and she was getting concerned because her friend with her ticket was appearing to be a no-show. I assured her that her problem and mine had the same solution, so I used at least one of the extras constructively.
I'm afraid I pooped out on the gathering at the park afterwards. They were serving out pieces of a huuuuuge "tomato" cake made by
lunar__angel and friends, but it had been getting hotter and hotter inside the hall (and as
c_bee remarked, was probably twice as hot up onstage) and I was sweaty and my shoulder was cramping a little from trying to keep my camcorder steady for extended periods of time. I didn't try and shoot the whole thing, just pieces here and there, but it was still pretty strenuous, so I was ready to call it a night.
I'm really annoyed that I managed to fool myself into thinking I was taping the duets with Jason and Amanda when in fact I had the camera in 'pause' during both of their numbers. For some reason I get momentarily confused from time to time and think that the green dot for 'pause' means the camera is 'going' (green for go, right?) and the red 'recording' dot means that the camera is stopped. Duh! In any event, I got some good stuff and here is one of the next to final numbers where he has almost everyone up on stage.
Pardon the shakiness from time to time, it was late in the show and I was starting to lose it. I was shifting from right hand to left to keep things going as best I could.
I'm not sure why it doesn't have the 'HQ' option available, as it was shot in hi-def. Maybe it was the software on my end, or maybe it just needs some additional processing time for that to be available. Oh well.
